compiling for iOS 3.1.3 after installing XCode 3.2.3

Honestly, I didn’t figure this was going to be a problem.

I downloaded the latest SDK to update an old project, and low and behold, nothing worked anymore.  I wasn’t able to build, deploy or do anything.  It also looked like all of my frameworks had suddenly disappeared.  Furthermore, after looking around, I could easily see how to compile for iOS 4.0, but not so much for iOS 3.1.3.

Turns out, this was a rather common occurence with iOS4 upgrade, and I was able to get myself back on track by making a few changes in the project file:

  1. Go to Project > “Edit Project Settings”
  2. Change the “Base SDK” to “iPhone device 4.0” (not “iPhone device 3.2” as that is strictly for iPad users)
  3. Change the iPhone OS Deployment Target to 3.1.3

You may also need to make specific changes to your targets to make sure that this takes effect there as well.

eliminating distraction

I find that I’m very easily distracted.

I’m currently trying two different techniques at once to improve productivity.  The first is the pomodoro method, which really comes down to:  set a kitchen timer to a certain amount of time, and you must work during that.  After this period is done, set another “break” timer.  I downloaded a MacOS app to manage the clock for me, and this has done good things for getting me moving.

The second method I tried is rerouting my favorite websites to localhost and then doing my best to resist the temptation to take them out.  This has worked surprisingly well as I have tried this in the past, and usually allow myself breaks during specific times.  If I get fancy, I’m going to attempt to modify this timer script to automatically add and remove the sites from my hosts list for great victory.
